WHAT THE VOLT
With the introduction of the 2.4 GHz radios, some new rules have come about. In
the past, we would charge our 4.8 v power pack and go fly. This is not true anymore. The new 2.4 receivers work a little bit
different than the older analog radios. The new radios operate at 3.3 volts REGULATED internal. This voltage comes from a
precision regulator. This regulator passes power to the receiver through a passive transistor. This transistor can drop as
much as 1.4 volts. This 1.4 has to be ADDED to the 3.3 to get 4.7 volts that has to come from the 4.8 volt pack. This is why
the AMA says to use a five cell pack when you are flying fuel powered aircraft with 2.4 GHz radio.
The electric powered aircraft do
not have this problem IF they supply the 5 volts to the radio receiver. This is normally done through the signal line to channel
three.
